Trauma Therapy
Trauma therapy recognizes the role of past trauma on present day symptoms and offers many highly effective strategies and interventions for healing. Trauma therapy can assist you in making sense of what happened, understanding your emotions, and getting unstuck from limiting patterns and beliefs so that you can feel empowered to realize and step into your dreams. I have over 15 years of extensive post graduate training in and experience providing trauma therapy including successfully assisting many of our country’s most trauma impacted combat Veterans in overcoming trauma legacies. Some of the leading, innovative, and well researched trauma therapy modalities I have advanced training and expertise in are as follows.
Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) - I am certified in EMDR through EMDR International Association. EMDR is a well researched and effective trauma therapy. EMDR is a mind-body technique used to process disturbing memories that contribute to unexplained fears and self-defeating beliefs and behaviors. Studies have shown that participating in just a few sessions of EMDR often results in experiencing the benefits of therapy that once took years to make a difference.
Internal Family Systems (IFS) - I am trained through the founder of IFS, Richard Schwartz, Ph.D.’s, IFS Institute. IFS is an evidence-based therapy that identifies and addresses multiple inner parts, sub-personalities, or families within each person’s mental system. These inner parts often include wounded parts that hold painful emotions, including anger and shame, as well as parts that try to control and protect the person from the pain of the wounded parts. Parts are often in conflict with each other and with one’s core Self (a concept that describes the calm, confident, compassionate, whole person that is at the core of every individual). IFS assists people in healing their wounded parts and transforming dysfunctional dynamics among their parts and Self to restore mental balance and harmony.
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) - CPT is a type of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy found to be effective in treating trauma symptoms. I have specialized training in CPT in which I worked closely with an expert in the field. If you’ve experienced trauma, you may think differently about yourself and your environment, particularly in terms of safety (you might doubt your ability to keep yourself and others safe), trust (you question your judgement or the intentions of others), control (you don’t feel able to control your own life or influence those you care about), esteem (you see yourself as broken and others as evil), and intimacy (you feel unable to connect with or be understood and accepted by others). These thoughts lead to painful emotions and can prevent you from recovering. CPT assists you in developing skills to challenge these negative thoughts and reverse the impact they have on your life.
